Every year, between the months of May and July, many millions of silvery sardines travel north from the cold southern oceans off South Africa's Cape Point, hugging the shore as they make their way up along the coastlines of the former Transkei (northern Eastern Cape) and KwaZulu-Natal in what is commonly known as the annual Sardine Run.

Day 1: arrive at King Shaka Airport – a representative from the SEAL TEAM will meet you and drive you to your accommodation - MBOTYI RIVER LODGE

A warm welcome awaits at Mbotyi River Lodge, a 3 star rated family hotel and holiday resort on the stunning Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Pondoland’s best kept secret is situated at the mouth of the tidal Mbotyi River nestled between the rolling hills, lush tropical forest and the warm Indian Ocean.

This unique Wild Coast hotel is the perfect place for a peaceful, tranquil holiday or for the more adventurous traveller wanting to experience the many amazing natural treasures like waterfalls and forests this coast has to offer.

Day 2 – Day 8: you have a daily chance to experience the sardine run (scuba, snorkel or viewing from the boat). A packed breakfast and lunch are included.

Afternoons and when the weather is bad, there are other activities on offer: Microlight - each guest has the chance to view the sardine run by microlight, horse riding (costs extra), sundowner cocktails, walking/hiking, visit a witch doctor (costs extra), cultural tours (costs extra).

Dinner is included in the lodge

This is an event for everyone to enjoy - be it bird watchers, marine-life enthusiasts, amateur or highly experienced divers or snorkellers. Experience the Sardine Run beneath the waves or above. Either way it has been described as one of the greatest marine spectacles on earth.
